Robert Burne

Honorary Professor Robert Burne is affiliated with the School of the Environment at The University of Queensland (UQ), within the Faculty of Science. His research focuses on microbial geology, sedimentology, and paleontology, with particular expertise in stromatolites, microbialites, and carbonate systems. He holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Wales and a PhD from the University of Oxford.

His work examines ancient and modern microbial sedimentation processes, including studies on Cambrian red beds, Triassic ooids, and microbialite evolution. Over 40 journal articles and conference papers highlight his contributions to understanding biomineralization, sedimentary dynamics, and environmental change. He remains available for research supervision and collaborates internationally on projects involving carbonates and microbial signatures.

Key research themes include stromatolite morphogenesis, geochemical signatures in sedimentary laminae, and the interplay between microbial activity and carbonate mineral formation. His studies often bridge geological history with modern analogs, such as Shark Bay microbialites and Lake Clifton thrombolites.
