Robert Boyle is a Professor in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at Wayne State University, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He has held roles including Chair of Geography and Urban Planning (1992), Associate Dean, and returned to full-time faculty in 2014. He directs the Graduate Certificate Program in Economic Development. His career includes visiting professorships at TU-Dortmund (Germany, 2014) and the University of Melbourne (Australia, 2015). Educated at the Glasgow School of Art and the University of Reading (UK), Boyle has extensive experience in urban policy and planning.
Research interests focus on urban governance, economic development, and responses to urban shrinkage. He studies mobility systems, adaptive reuse of property, and cross-national policy comparisons. His work addresses legacy cities, metropolitan management, and sustainability frameworks. Boyle has contributed to initiatives like the Detroit Revitalization Fellows and serves on boards including the Planning Board for Birmingham, MI, and the Urban Land Institute.
Key publications include analyses of taxicab mobility in SE Michigan (2016), master planning in shrinking cities (2016), and adaptive reuse linked to sustainability (2017). His research spans transportation policy, economic viability, and urban regeneration strategies. Boyle actively advises regional bodies like the Michigan Suburbs Alliance and MEDC’s Redevelopment Ready Communities program.
