معرفی
Dr Robert Boland is a Clinical Associate Professor in Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney, a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist, and Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists. He concurrently serves as a post-doctoral researcher, Specialist Clinician with NSW Health, and Independent Physiotherapy Consultant for WorkCover NSW, while coordinating the Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy programme.
Education & Qualifications:
- PhD – University of Sydney
- Graduate Diploma of Applied Science (Physiotherapy)
- Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy)
- Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists
Research Interests:
Boland’s research integrates clinical neurophysiology with musculoskeletal practice, focusing on mechanisms and management of carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral-nerve changes following spinal cord injury, and neurophysiological biomarkers in motor-neuron disease/ALS. Additional interests span evidence-based physiotherapy, osteoarthritis and peri-operative optimisation of obese patients awaiting joint replacement, chronic pain management, and implementation of culturally responsive rehabilitation programmes.
Publication Trends:
Across 60+ peer-reviewed outputs (2002-2024) Boland demonstrates sustained productivity in three intersecting streams: (i) nerve pathophysiology—particularly median-nerve excitability, ischaemia and compression in carpal tunnel syndrome; (ii) spinal cord injury and ALS—axonal-function biomarkers and motor adaptation; and (iii) musculoskeletal implementation science—exercise accessibility, weight-management prior to arthroplasty, and culturally informed pain programmes. His collaborative network is reflected in multi-centre RCTs, mixed-methods studies and systematic reviews targeting translation of evidence into clinical and policy practice.
Scientific Awards & Recognition:
- Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists – conferred specialist title acknowledging expertise and contribution to musculoskeletal physiotherapy.
Grants & Support:
- 2003 University of Sydney Equipment Grant – Perometer for limb-volume measurement (CI: Adams, Boland, Harmer, Kilbreath, Moseley, Refshauge).
- 2003 University of Sydney Internal Research Grant – A new treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome (PI: Boland).
- 2001 NSW Physiotherapists Registration Board Research Grant – Effects of pre-treatment exercises on outcome in patients with shoulder pain (PI: Boland).
Teaching & Clinical Roles:
Boland coordinates the Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy E coursework programme, lectures nationally and internationally on evidence-based practice and nerve disorders, and maintains an active clinical caseload as a NSW Health Specialist Clinician and WorkCover consultant, integrating research findings directly into patient care and policy development.
