Robert Boes is Full Professor and Director of the Laboratory of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Glaciology at ETH Zurich. His research advances hydraulic engineering for sustainable water resource management, focusing on dam safety, flood protection, and hydropower optimization.
Research investigates multiphase flows, sediment transport, hydroabrasion, and eco-hydraulic solutions for fish migration. Current projects examine reservoir sedimentation management, impulse wave dynamics, and climate adaptation strategies for hydraulic infrastructure.
Professor Boes received the Karl Emil Hilgard Hydraulic Prize (2023) for fundamental contributions to hydraulic research and the Golden Owl (2022) for teaching excellence. He serves on expert committees for the Swiss Federal Office of Energy and International Commission on Large Dams.
Professional activities include consulting on major dam projects globally and developing safety guidelines through the Swiss National Committee on Dams.
