Robert Barnard is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Mississippi, affiliated with the Department of Philosophy and Religion in the College of Liberal Arts. He has been a faculty member since 2000 and holds a PhD from the University of Memphis (2000), an MA (1994), and a BA from the American University in Washington, DC.
His research spans metaphysics, epistemology, philosophical methodology, and the history of analytic philosophy (especially Russell, Wittgenstein, and Frege). He is a leading figure in experimental philosophy, using empirical surveys to explore the folk conception of truth, paradox, and objectivity. With Terry Horgan, he developed the Mediated Correspondence theory of truth, and with Joseph Ulatowski, he has conducted pioneering studies on gender differences in truth judgments and the cognitive psychology of the Liar paradox.
Barnard’s recent publications analyze the evolution of experimental philosophy, the objectivity of truth, and Tarski’s material adequacy condition. His work bridges traditional philosophical analysis with empirical data, contributing to debates in truth pluralism, logical normativity, and the philosophy of modeling.
