Robert Avery is a Senior Lecturer at York St John University within the School of Science, Technology and Health. He has extensive experience in vision impairment rehabilitation, having worked in the field since 1983 and becoming one of Scotland's first specialist Rehabilitation Workers for people with vision impairment in 1990.
His research focuses on Environmental Access, Technology Enhanced Learning, Inclusive design, and Inclusive sport. Avery has developed innovative approaches to creating positive learning spaces in both physical and digital environments, with particular emphasis on accessibility for people with vision impairment.
Avery's publications and conference presentations demonstrate his commitment to interdisciplinary approaches, with work spanning rehabilitation services, inclusive design, accessibility in the built environment, and blended learning models for professional development. His research consistently addresses practical applications for improving the lives of people with vision impairment.

Avery serves as mandatory training coordinator for both the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy programs. He delivers manual handling training and has developed online resources to support student learning. He also teaches the Support for Learning in Practice module to clinical educators in health and social care, ensuring quality placement provision for students.
His professional activities include membership in the YSJU Learning Spaces Project Group, Yorkshire Universities Spaces Working Group, and YSJU Staff Joint Consultative Committee. He has previously served on various faculty committees and was External Examiner for Foundation Degrees at other institutions.
