Robert A. Orsi is the Grace Craddock Nagle Chair of Catholic Studies and Professor of Religious Studies, History, and American Studies at Northwestern University. His research focuses on modern and contemporary religion, particularly Catholic practices and ideas, combining historical and ethnographic methods. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has held fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, NEH, Guggenheim Foundation, and Radcliffe Institute (2016-2017). In 2020-2021, he was a fellow at Notre Dame's Institute for Advanced Studies and the Cushwa Center. His major works include The Madonna of 115th Street, Thank You, Saint Jude, and History and Presence. He is currently completing Give Us Boys, exploring Jesuit education and modern Catholicism in New York City.
Orsi’s research integrates theory and method in religious studies, emphasizing lived experience and institutional dynamics. His recent writings address the intersection of religion, urbanism, and social class, reflecting his commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship. He has also engaged with contemporary issues like climate activism and the role of the Catholic Church in societal challenges.
