Dr. Robbie Higdon serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Middle Secondary and Mathematics Education at the College of Education, James Madison University. She teaches undergraduate courses in general instructional methods for grades 6-12 and coordinates field placements within the AVID programs in Harrisonburg City Schools.
Her educational background includes:
- Doctorate of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction, Clemson University, 2017
- Master of Education in Secondary Education, James Madison University, 1995
- Bachelor of Arts in History cum laude, Furman University, 1994
Dr. Higdon's research centers on teacher preparation and development. Her specific interests include:
- Pre-service teacher identity formation
- Early career field experiences of pre-service teachers
- Recruitment and retention of STEM teachers
- Impact of study away immersive experiences on pre-service teacher identity
- Outreach activities for K-8 in STEM
She is actively engaged in advising and program leadership:
- Co-advisor for the JMU chapter of the National Science Teachers Association
- Co-advisor for the ROOP Residential Learning Community for Education
- Co-director of the College of Education Northern Ireland Cross-cultural Field Experience
Prior to joining JMU, Dr. Higdon worked for over fifteen years in South Carolina public schools as a teacher, department chair, program coordinator, and administrator. At Clemson University, she collaborated with the Inquiry in Motion professional development initiative for middle school science and math teachers.
