Robbie Fordyce is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Media at Monash University's Faculty of Arts. He holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne (2019), specializing in critiques of autonomist Marxist theories of imperialism and their intersections with platform studies, digital ethics, and media infrastructure.
His research focuses on games studies (esports, avatars, political economies of gaming), media infrastructures (smart cities, surveillance, platform governance), and digital cultural theories (Marxist media analysis, post-digital subjectivity). He is a lead investigator on projects addressing AI workforce risks (2025-2028) and dark advertising regulation (2019-2020), and has contributed to government submissions on social media policy.
Recent work examines WeChat's role in Australian political communication, automated cultural systems, and computational methods for ad transparency. He advises PhD students and collaborates internationally on topics ranging from blockchain ethics to pandemic tracking apps.
