Dr. Rob den Otter is a Lecturer in the Department of Human Movement Sciences within the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Groningen (UMCG). He is affiliated with the SMART Movements research group and maintains an active research profile with 65 documented research outputs spanning articles, posters, abstracts, and other scholarly contributions. His work contributes to Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
Dr. den Otter's research focuses on human movement science with expertise in:
- Gait adaptation mechanisms to various perturbations
- Effects of optic flow on walking patterns
- Locomotor control in healthy and clinical populations
- Post-stroke rehabilitation techniques
- Age-related changes in walking biomechanics
- Body weight support systems including Lokomat exoskeleton
His recent publications demonstrate a cohesive research trajectory examining how humans adapt walking patterns to constraints. The work spans neuroscience, biomechanics, and rehabilitation science, with applications for both healthy individuals and clinical populations. Much of this research employs sophisticated measurement techniques including motion capture, electromyography, and neural coherence analysis.
Dr. den Otter has received significant recognition for his teaching excellence, being awarded 'Lecturer of the Year' twice in 2019 - by both the Department of Human Movement Sciences and the Medical Faculty/UMCG.
He actively supervises students with documented involvement in PhD supervision at the University of Groningen. His research has garnered academic and media attention, including coverage of 'Split-Belt Sticks: Gait Adaptation That Lasts Weeks' (May 2025) and contributions to 'Moving Matters' (2018).
Dr. den Otter maintains strong collaborative relationships with rehabilitation centers including Revalidatie Friesland and Sint Maartenskliniek, and participates in professional organizations such as the International Society of Posture and Gait Research.
