Rob Whitley is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University's Faculty of Medicine and a researcher at the Douglas Research Centre. He serves as Principal Investigator of the Social Psychiatry Research and Interest Group (SPRING) and holds the prestigious title of Fonds de recherche du Québec-Santé Distinguished Research Scholar. Additionally, he maintains an affiliation as Honorary Principal Fellow at the University of Melbourne. His academic journey includes a Leverhulme Trust Post-Doctoral Fellowship and U.K. Medical Research Council Ph.D. Scholarship.
Whitley's research centers on mental health recovery, stigma reduction, and suicide prevention, with particular emphasis on underserved populations including immigrants, military veterans, and men. His work demonstrates that recovery extends beyond clinical symptom remission to encompass employment, social relationships, spirituality, and societal contribution. His research identifies stigma as the primary barrier to recovery, directly impacting quality of life and psychological well-being. Methodologically, he frequently employs participatory action research, notably through RADAR Mental Health, a collective of videographers with lived mental illness experience that produces documentaries for organizations worldwide.
His scholarship shows consistent focus on media representations of mental illness, with longitudinal studies tracking Canadian news coverage from 2005-2023. Recent publications reveal growing attention to men's mental health, Haredi Jewish communities, and the psychological impact of direct-to-consumer DNA testing. His work demonstrates increasing international collaboration, particularly with researchers in Jamaica, Chile, Mexico, and Spain.

Whitley actively supervises students including PhD candidates and medical residents, with current advisees focusing on immigrant mental health, veteran transitions, and religious community barriers. His RADAR Mental Health initiative represents a significant grant-funded project that has produced numerous stigma-reduction videos. He maintains strong policy engagement, having provided expert testimony to Canadian Senate committees, UK House of Commons committees, and presented at the European Parliament, leading to his Congressional Medal recognition. His international work includes collaborations with researchers across Latin America focusing on culturally specific mental health challenges.
As founding director of RADAR Mental Health, Whitley has established a sustainable model for participatory video production that empowers individuals with lived mental illness experience. His research team operates within the Douglas Research Centre's Division of Social and Transcultural Psychiatry, collaborating closely with institutions across Quebec and internationally. His current projects increasingly focus on cross-cultural applications of recovery frameworks and adapting mental health services for religious minority populations.
