Dr Rob Ralston is a Lecturer in Public Policy at the University of Edinburgh's Social Policy department, based in the Chrystal Macmillan Building at 15a George Square, Edinburgh. His research critically examines corporate power dynamics within global governance frameworks, with specific focus on health and climate policy intersections.
Ralston's work centers on the political economy of global environmental and health governance, analyzing corporate influence in treaty negotiations like the UN Global Plastics Treaty. His research spans philanthropy in global health, neoliberalism's impact on policy, multistakeholder governance in food systems, and 'governance frames' in sustainable development. He has published extensively in high-impact interdisciplinary journals including Global Environmental Politics, One Earth, Policy & Politics, and The Lancet, establishing himself as a leading critical voice in commercial determinants of health and environmental policy.
His recent publications reveal a consistent analytical thread examining corporate strategies across environmental and health governance, particularly how industries resist regulation through partnerships, philanthropy, and framing tactics. This work demonstrates growing scholarly influence in exposing institutional tensions between public health/environmental goals and commercial interests, with increasing policy relevance evidenced by submissions to international treaty negotiations.
