Dr Rob Nicholls is a senior academic and policy specialist at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, affiliated with the Discipline of Media and Communications. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Birmingham, an MA in International Relations, and a PhD in Social Science from UNSW. His research focuses on the intersection of technology and regulation, particularly in digital platforms, competition law, AI governance, and cybersecurity. Current projects include leading the International Digital Policy Observatory (IDPO), an open-source regulatory tracking tool, and contributing to the Centre for AI, Trust, and Governance.
Nicholls has extensive experience in policy advising, regulatory strategy, and mediation. He serves on editorial boards for the Australian Business Law Journal and Competition and Consumer Law Journal, and holds memberships in professional bodies like the Resolution Institute and IEEE. His work spans antitrust enforcement, digital privacy, and telecommunications regulation, with notable contributions to Australia's News Media Bargaining Code and merger clearance policies.
Recent publications highlight his expertise in algorithmic collusion, generative AI regulation, and digital platform governance. He regularly engages with media, providing commentary on tech antitrust cases, social media regulation, and cybersecurity challenges.
