Rob Mitchell is a Principal Lecturer of Jazz at Leeds Conservatoire, specializing in saxophone, composition, and jazz performance. He leads the BA (Hons) Music (Jazz) course, focusing on jazz composition and arranging. With over a decade of teaching experience, he is an award-winning educator known for his innovative pedagogy.
His career includes performances with renowned artists such as Martha Reeves, The BBC Big Band, and Slum Village, alongside collaborations with bands like The Haggis Horns and Abstract Orchestra. Mitchell has toured globally, headlining festivals like Glastonbury and BBC Proms in the Park, reaching audiences of 45k–85k.
As the founder/composer of Abstract Orchestra, he blends jazz orchestration with hip-hop, achieving chart success with tracks like '2 Hands Up' (#3 US hip-hop charts, 2020). His discography spans decades, encompassing jazz, funk, and electronic fusion across 30+ albums and singles. Recent work emphasizes cross-genre collaborations and experimental arrangements.
Mitchell’s performances and recordings have been featured on BBC Four, BBC Radio 2&3, and international publications like Saxophone & Clarinet Magazine. His teaching philosophy integrates live performance experience with composition techniques, reflecting his dual role as an artist and academic.
