Rob Gorbet

Rob Gorbet is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Knowledge Integration at the University of Waterloo. His research spans robotics, artificial intelligence, and interdisciplinary education, with a focus on human-robot interaction, affective computing, and responsive architectural systems. He leads projects in STEM education innovation, particularly in K-12 robotics integration and wicked problem-solving pedagogy. His work includes developing memory-based deep reinforcement learning frameworks and exploring affective movement generation through Laban effort theory. As a leader in the Living Architecture Systems Group, he designs interactive installations like the Hylozoic Ground, blending technology with architectural environments to create liminal spaces.

His academic journey includes foundational contributions to shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator modeling and control systems, extending into hybrid monolithic SMA actuators and thermal compensation mechanisms.
