Dr. Rob Geist Pinfold is a Lecturer in Defence Studies (International Security) at King's College London's School of Security Studies, within the Defence Studies Department. He previously held roles at Durham University, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the University of Haifa. His research focuses on international security, military occupation, territorial disputes, and Middle East conflicts, particularly the Arab-Israeli conflict and Syrian Civil War. Pinfold also serves as a Research Fellow at Charles University's Peace Research Center Prague and Herzl Center for Israel Studies, and as an Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University's SAIS.
His work bridges strategy and territorial conflict, emphasizing Israel's foreign policy, occupation dynamics, and regional security. Notable publications include Understanding Territorial Withdrawal: Israeli Occupations and Exits (Oxford UP, 2023), which won the 2024 European Association of Israel Studies Academic Achievement Award. He contributes policy briefs to War on the Rocks and RUSI and provides media commentary for outlets like BBC, France 24, and Al Jazeera.
Pinfold's research centers on three themes: military occupation and exit dilemmas, territorial disputes, and grand strategy. He co-edited The Routledge Handbook on Israel’s Foreign Relations (2024) and Understanding Israel: Political, Security and Societal Challenges (2018). His analyses often address Israel's strategic decisions in the Middle East and their global implications.
