Professor Rob Freckleton is the Chair in Population Biology and Head of the School of Biosciences at the University of Sheffield. His academic journey includes roles as a Royal Society University Research Fellow and positions at the University of Oxford and the University of East Anglia. He specializes in population and community dynamics, with a focus on plant population ecology, evolutionary ecology, and theoretical methodologies.
Research interests include modeling large-scale population dynamics, phylogenetic comparative methods, and statistical ecology. Freckleton has contributed to understanding density-dependent processes in tropical forests, the evolution of parental care in birds, and herbicide resistance in agricultural weeds like black-grass (Alopecurus myosuroides).
His work bridges ecological theory and practical applications, such as climate change impacts on species vulnerability and the role of enhanced weathering in carbon removal. Freckleton has supervised numerous PhD students and collaborates with global researchers on topics like tropical conservation and biodiversity dynamics. Awards include the Royal Society University Research Fellowship. He also holds editorial roles in leading ecology journals and advises on agricultural and environmental policy.
