Rita Wong is an Associate Professor in the Department of Critical and Cultural Studies at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, part of the Faculty of Culture + Community. Her work bridges poetics with ecological and social justice frameworks, particularly focusing on decolonization and water studies. She holds a PhD from Simon Fraser University, where her research examined Asian North American cultural production.
Her research interests include the intersections of contemporary poetry with environmental advocacy, Indigenous knowledge systems, and anti-colonial practices. Wong’s creative output spans poetry, interdisciplinary collaborations, and public engagement projects that address climate change and marginalized communities.
Wong has received major literary accolades including the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize and Canada Reads Poetry 2011. Her teaching emphasizes critical dialogue and lifelong learning through courses like Academic Core I/II and Special Topics in Writing. She currently teaches Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 terms.
