Rita Sakr is an Associate Professor in Postcolonial and Global Literatures at Maynooth University’s Department of English, Faculty of Arts and Humanities. She previously held roles as Lecturer in World Literature at Goldsmiths, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Orient Institut Beirut, and Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Kent. Her interdisciplinary work bridges literature, cultural studies, and social justice initiatives.
- Education: PhD in English Studies (Global Literatures) from the University of Nottingham.
- Research Focus: Forced displacement, decoloniality, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean studies, environmental humanities, and more-than-human rights.
Her recent publications explore experimental Arab literatures, necropolitics, and decolonial hauntology. She co-directed the documentary White Flags on post-war arts-based peace-building and leads the EU-funded 'Re-visiting the Mediterranean' project (2024–2026). Rita also contributes to global media, including BBC World Service and RTE Brainstorm, and serves on the judging panels of the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature and the International Dublin Literary Award.
Rita co-designed Maynooth’s interdisciplinary MA in Cultures of Migration and coordinates the MA English: Literatures of Engagement until 2022. She co-chairs the Maynooth University Sanctuary Programme and co-founded the Irish Network of Middle Eastern and North African Studies (INMENAS). Her teaching includes modules on post-imperial cities, migrant writing, and experimental forms.
