Rita Klees is a Professor of Engineering Practice and Scholar-in-Residence at the University of Colorado Boulder, affiliated with the Mortenson Center in Global Engineering as Associate Director of Outreach. She holds a B.A. from College of St. Catherine (1972), M.A. from University of Chicago (1975), and Ph.D./M.S. from University of Colorado (1986, 1989).
Her research focuses on environmental health, wastewater treatment, sanitation systems, and water supply in low- and middle-income countries. She teaches courses like Global Development for Engineering and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). Her work emphasizes international development and engineering education for global contexts.
Recent publications highlight contributions to global engineering pedagogy and interdisciplinary program design. Awards include AAAS fellowships and recognition for teaching excellence. She collaborates widely on projects addressing sanitation challenges and sustainable development initiatives.
