Risako Shirane, MD, MSc is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at Yale School of Medicine with dual appointments in the Primary Care Neurology and Headache Medicine division and as Affiliated Faculty at the Yale Institute for Global Health.

Dr. Shirane completed her medical education at Kobe University School of Medicine in Japan (2017), followed by a Master's in Public Health from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2010). Her clinical training includes medicine internship and neurology residency at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (2019-2022), where she served as chief resident, and a headache medicine fellowship at Yale School of Medicine (2023).
Her research focuses on innovative approaches to headache disorders, with particular emphasis on neuromodulation techniques and alternative therapies for treatment-resistant conditions. Dr. Shirane's work bridges clinical neurology with public health perspectives, addressing health equity issues in headache care and the societal impact of chronic headache disorders. She is particularly interested in how stigma affects treatment access for headache sufferers and advocates for improved understanding of these conditions within the medical community and society at large.
Her recent publications demonstrate growing interest in novel therapeutic approaches, including neuromodulation devices and psychedelic compounds for cluster headache management, reflecting emerging trends in non-pharmacological and alternative treatment modalities within headache medicine.

Dr. Shirane serves as Assistant Editor on the editorial board of Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain and is an active member of both the American Academy of Neurology and the American Headache Society.
