Risa Sargent

Risa Sargent is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Ottawa, Canada. Her research focuses on evolutionary ecology, particularly the interactions between flowering plants and their pollinators, predators, and invasive species. She explores how these interactions influence plant evolution, community assembly, and responses to global change. Sargent’s work integrates field experiments, meta-analyses, and phylogenetic tools to address questions about plant adaptation and ecosystem services.

Education: Sargent holds a doctoral degree from the University of British Columbia and conducted postdoctoral research at UC Berkeley. Her expertise spans plant-pollinator interactions, invasive species management, and the impacts of biological control agents on plant communities. She currently leads the Sargent Lab, which investigates topics such as pollinator declines in urban areas, pesticide effects on native pollinators, and the evolutionary responses of invasive species.

Research Interests: Central to her work are the evolutionary mechanisms driving plant trait adaptation, the role of pollinators in shaping plant communities, and the ecological consequences of invasive species. Her lab’s projects often address applied questions relevant to agriculture, conservation, and policy, such as mitigating invasive species impacts and enhancing pollinator services in agro-ecosystems.

Opportunities: The lab offers MSc and PhD positions in plant community ecology, invasive species biology, and global change ecology. Current projects include studying pollinator diversity in grazed ecosystems and the effects of climate change on plant-pollinator synchrony.
