Riley Yuan

Riley Yuan is a Murrow News Fellow at Washington State University's Murrow College of Communication, focusing on environmental science, policy, and community issues affecting indigenous and immigrant populations along the southwest Washington coast. He works with the Chinook Observer, leveraging his background in biology and journalism.

• Education: BS in Biology from Cornell University, MFA in Nonfiction Writing from Oregon State University

His research interests center on environmental regulation, indigenous communities, and science communication, particularly in marginalized coastal regions. With experience as a wildfire fighter (Baker River Hotshots), Peace Corps volunteer in West Timor, Indonesia, and former photographer intern at The Saginaw News, Yuan bridges fieldwork with journalistic storytelling.

Currently serving a two-year term (April 2024–March 2026), he contributes to community-based reporting while maintaining ties to academic communication research. His work intersects with Media, Adolescents, and Cannabis (MAC) Lab and Murrow Media Mind Lab initiatives through environmental and health communication lenses.
