Riikka Homanen is a University Lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lapland, specializing in Global Northern Communities and Societies Welfare, Work and Citizenship. Her academic credentials include Doctor of Social Sciences and Docent status, reflecting her expertise in sociology and gender studies.
Dr. Homanen's research interests span multiple interconnected fields including Sociology, Gender studies, Reproductive Justice, Assisted Reproductive Technology, Institutional ethnography, Reproductive Citizenship, Population policy, Fertility studies, Nordic welfare state dynamics, and Migration studies. Her work critically examines the intersections of technology, ethics, and social structures in reproductive contexts.
Her recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory focusing on reproductive justice frameworks, Nordic welfare systems, and the social implications of reproductive technologies. The research shows increasing attention to AI applications in reproductive medicine, genomic technologies, and how population registration systems affect migrant family relationships in Nordic contexts.
Currently serving as Principal Investigator for the ReproTime project (2024-2028) funded by the Academy of Finland, Dr. Homanen leads research on the Gendered Ethics of Reproductive Time, examining how science, technology, and market forces shape reproductive experiences and decisions.
Dr. Homanen actively participates in academic discourse through conference presentations, including recent talks on 'Haunted Data "Goldmine": Repropolitical Anxieties and Injustice in Finland' and 'Institutional Ethnography (IE) and Feminist Studies of Technoscience (FT): The Politics of Observing Nordic Care,' demonstrating her engagement with both theoretical frameworks and practical applications of her research.
