Dr. Rico M. Gazal is a Professor in the Forestry Land Resources Department at Glenville State University, where he has taught since 2005. His research focuses on ecophysiology, geospatial techniques, and their application to ecosystem studies, particularly invasive species dynamics, climate change impacts, and forest management. He earned his Ph.D. in Forest Resources from Mississippi State University (2002), and earlier degrees from the University of the Philippines: Master's in Forestry (1998) and Bachelor's in Forestry (1993).
Key research interests include the physiological and spatial analysis of plant invasions (e.g., Ailanthus altissima), urban heat island effects on tree phenology, and desert riparian ecosystem hydrology. He has collaborated with institutions like NASA's GLOBE Program, Kyushu University (Japan), and the USDA Forest Service. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, linking ecological science with education through online learning modules and citizen science initiatives.
Dr. Gazal has advised numerous undergraduates on research projects, including studies on exotic plant invasion patterns, canopy gap characteristics, and road impacts on invasive species dispersion. His presentations and workshops span global venues, including Japan, Thailand, and Senegal, reflecting his commitment to international collaboration. Though no formal awards are listed, his extensive publication record (over 40 articles and modules) and active student mentoring highlight his scholarly contributions.
