Rickey Vincent is a Lecturer in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. His expertise spans black music history, black power movements, and the cultural politics of Hip Hop. He obtained his Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies from UC Berkeley in 2008. Dr. Vincent is the author of two seminal works: Funk: The Music, the People and the Rhythm of The One (1996) and Party Music (2013), which explores the intersection of soul music and Black Panther Party activism. He hosts The History of Funk on KPFA radio.
His research focuses on how music intersects with social movements and globalization, particularly through studies of funk and the cultural legacy of the Black Power era. His work bridges academic scholarship with public engagement via radio and publishing.
Office hours are held Monday–Friday 9am–12pm and 1pm–4pm at 660 Social Sciences Building, Berkeley, CA.
