Rick Welch is a Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where he served as Dean of Arts and Sciences from 1996 to 2005. He holds affiliated roles as an Affiliated Research Scholar in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge and a Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall. His academic career spans theoretical biophysical chemistry and the history of science, with a focus on cell metabolism and interdisciplinary scientific concepts.
Welch earned his B.S. in Physics from the University of Tennessee (1970), followed by a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Tennessee–Oak Ridge Graduate School (1975), and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Theoretical Biophysics at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium.
His research explores the intersection of physical and biological sciences, emphasizing historical developments in cellular systems biology. Key interests include cell theory, protoplasmic theories, and the evolution of scientific terminology. He co-founded the Gordon Research Conference on Cellular Systems Biology and has been funded by the NSF, NIH, and the Wellcome Trust.
Notable awards include Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1995) and Visiting Fellowships at Clare Hall. His work spans scholarly books, encyclopedia entries, and peer-reviewed articles analyzing scientific paradigms and historical methodologies. He currently resides in Cambridge, UK, continuing research in the history of science and biophysical concepts.
