Dr. Rick De Vos serves as a Researcher at RMIT University's School of Global, Urban and Social Studies (GUSS), affiliated with the Centre for Urban Research. His work focuses on anthropogenic extinction, particularly through the ARC-funded project 'Extinction Imaginaries: Mapping Affective Visual Cultures in Australasia.' He co-edits Sydney University Press' Animal Politics book series, emphasizing decolonial approaches to animal studies.
Research interests include the cultural and historical dimensions of extinction, colonial species histories, and the intersection of urban environments with ecological crises. His work interrogates how extinction is narrated through visual and literary cultures, and explores postcolonial frameworks for understanding species loss.
Key publication trends span interdisciplinary studies of extinction narratives, decolonial methodologies in environmental humanities, and animal politics. His edited volume Decolonising Animals (2023) exemplifies this focus, while recent work like 'Narwhals for All Seasons' (2024) examines Arctic ecosystems through an anthropological lens.
De Vos contributes to global debates on environmental justice and ecological memory, leveraging urban research to address contemporary biodiversity challenges. His scholarship bridges humanities and science to critically engage with anthropogenic environmental impacts.
