Riché Barnes is an Instructor in Yale College Summer Programs at Yale University and previously served as Dean of Pierson College. She holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from Emory University, with earlier degrees from Spelman College and Georgia State University. Her research focuses on Black families, gender, motherhood, and race/class intersections across the African Diaspora. Notable work includes her book Raising the Race, which examines how Black career women redefine marriage and motherhood. Barnes has also explored health disparities, strategies for educating Black children, and the 'Strong Black Woman' archetype.
Her scholarly contributions appear in collections like The Changing Landscape of Work and Family and The Gender, Culture, and Power Reader. Barnes has received numerous awards, including the ASA Distinguished Book Award. She previously taught at Smith College and held roles as Assistant Dean and Associate Professor of Anthropology at Endicott College.
