Richelle D. Schrock is an Associate Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Africana, Gender, & Identity Studies at Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU), where she has been a faculty member since 2008. She is a central figure in the Women’s and Gender Studies Program and is deeply involved in interdisciplinary and community-engaged scholarship.
Her research focuses on Global Feminisms and Feminist Ethnography, particularly how women across cultural boundaries collaborate for social change. A key area of her work involves the Somali Muslim community in Columbus, Ohio, where she conducted dissertation research and led a transformative Sagan Course on Gender and Immigrant Experience, helping resettle a Somali refugee family. This work connected academic inquiry with real-world impact, allowing students to engage with issues of identity, migration, and post-9/11 Muslim American experiences.
Dr. Schrock has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Sherwood Dodge Shankland Award for Encouragement of Teachers (2013), the Bishop Herbert Welch Award for Scholarly or Artistic Achievement, and the Bishop Herbert Welch Meritorious Teaching Award. She also holds the Libuse L. Reed Endowed Professorship, reflecting her excellence in teaching and scholarship.
She has received external funding, including a Coca-Cola grant for women, to support her dissertation research. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes experiential learning, student engagement, and the integration of community service into academic coursework. While no formal list of advisees or publications is provided, her leadership in the department and active involvement in academic programs underscore her significant contributions to OWU’s educational mission.
Dr. Schrock is based in Elliott Hall 211C and remains actively engaged with both campus life and the broader Columbus community, particularly through her ongoing connections with the Somali community.
