Richard Yntema is an Associate Professor of History at Otterbein University. His research focuses on European economic and social history, particularly the political economy of growth and decline in industries like Holland’s brewing sector (1500-1800). He explores how guilds, technology, and political policies shaped economic development.

Research Interests: Dr. Yntema examines why some regions become wealthy while others remain poor, analyzing institutional impacts on market economies and industrialization. His current project investigates Holland’s brewing industry decline through guild dynamics, technological change, and consumer shifts to spirits, tea, and coffee.
Publications: His work appears in edited volumes such as The Political Economy of the Dutch Republic and Beer! The Story of Holland’s Favourite Drink, focusing on tariff barriers, guilds, and early modern trade.

Teaching & Affiliations: He teaches Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Modern European History, as well as courses on global capitalism. He contributes to Otterbein’s Integrative Studies and First Year Experience programs. He is affiliated with the American Historical Association and the Economic History Society.
