Richard Wightman is a Teaching Professor and Assistant Dean (Teaching and Undergraduate Affairs) at the University of New Brunswick's Faculty of Computer Science. He joined the faculty at the turn of the century and has held roles such as Director of Cooperative Education, Information Systems Coordinator, and member of key committees like Recruitment and Innovations and Industry. He currently teaches courses including CS1083 (Introduction to Computer Programming II in Java) and CS3103 (Programming on the Web).
Education: BScF and MScF in Forestry from the University of New Brunswick.
Research and Professional Interests: Focus on web programming, open-source software, Raspberry Pi, legacy computing systems, and computer science education outreach. He actively explores topics like Kubernetes orchestration, Linux/OS X systems, and developing educational materials for high school computer science using Python. Additional interests include large file transfer optimizations, LED-based learning tools for programming concepts, and crowdsourced cellular coverage mapping.
Commitment to Student Engagement: Maintains a dedicated focus on undergraduate research projects through courses like CS4983 and CS4997. Current project proposals include Kubernetes proof-of-concept development, high school CS curriculum design, and hardware/software integration for pedagogical purposes.
