Richard Talbot is Professor and Programme Leader for Comedy Writing and Performance at the University of Salford's School of Arts, Media and Creative Technologies. He joined the university in 2010 with a background as a theatre maker and performer, maintaining a fractional (part-time) academic position while continuing professional performance work.
His research focuses on interdisciplinary applications of clowning and physical theatre, particularly in dementia care, mental health contexts, and digital environments. Talbot has developed innovative projects including 'Tank Tram' for WWI commemorations, 'Café Delay' language learning comedy series, and 'Human-Idiot-Puppet' digital clowning experiments in Japan.

He supervises multiple PhD candidates across physical theatre, digital performance, and socially engaged practice, while teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Comedy Writing, Physical Theatres, and Contemporary Performance Practice.
