Richard Stokes is Professor of Lieder at the Royal Academy of Music, specializing in art song, translation, and music history. His work bridges musical performance and literary scholarship, with notable translations of operatic libretti (e.g., Parsifal, Lulu) and Kafka’s prose. He has authored seminal texts on Baroque cantatas, Spanish and French song traditions, and Hugo Wolf’s lieder. Stokes’ translations of Jules Renard and his collaboration with Alfred Brendel highlight interdisciplinary approaches to music and poetry.
His research interests span musicology, vocal performance practices, and literary adaptation. Recent publications include Memoirs of an Accompanist (2020) and The Complete Songs of Hugo Wolf (2020). Stokes has been honored with Germany’s Order of Merit (2012) and Austria’s Cross of Honour (2022) for contributions to cultural heritage.
