Richard Smith is a Professor of ELT & Applied Linguistics at the University of Warwick's Department of Applied Linguistics. He specializes in the History of Language Learning and Teaching, Textbook Research, and Teacher Development. His research spans historical analysis of ELT practices, methodologies for teaching in resource-constrained environments, and fostering practitioner research globally.
He has led numerous international initiatives, including the Decentring ELT project and the Warwick ELT Archive. His editorial roles include contributions to ELT Journal and English Language Teacher Education and Development.
Research interests include historical linguistics in education, teacher autonomy, and global ELT practices. Notable publications focus on historical pedagogy, teacher-research mentorship, and innovations in language teaching.
