Richard S. Gray is a Professor and Canadian Grain Policy Research Chair at the University of Saskatchewan's Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Agricultural Policy Institute and previously held roles in policy advisory capacities. His expertise spans agricultural innovation systems, intellectual property management, and grain market dynamics.
Education includes a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley (1991), M.Sc. and B.S.A. from the University of Saskatchewan (1981 and 1979). His research focuses on optimizing agricultural innovation pathways for sustainable growth, with emphasis on funding mechanisms, biotechnology governance, and supply chain resilience. Recent work addresses pandemic impacts on agriculture, grain export policies, and farmer-researcher partnerships.
Key contributions include analyzing Western Canadian grain export capacity, intellectual property rights in plant breeding, and regulatory barriers to biotechnology adoption. He teaches courses like Agricultural Policy and Institutions and Introduction to Agricultural Economics.
Notable awards include the 2012 Canadian Agricultural Economics Society Article of Enduring Quality and a 2010 CAES Fellowship. Current research explores wheat quality management, post-pandemic supply chain adaptations, and climate-smart agricultural practices.
