Richard Rosenfeld is the Founders Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. His research focuses on social sources of violent crime, crime statistics, and crime control policy. He holds a PhD and B.A. in Sociology from the University of Oregon, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University.
His research interests include explaining U.S. crime trends, criminological theory, and the intersection of crime and economic conditions. Notable projects include evaluating law enforcement responses to firearm crimes in St. Louis and analyzing prison recidivism patterns. Rosenfeld has received multiple awards, including the Chancellor’s Excellence Awards for Research, Teaching, and Service, and the prestigious Edwin H. Sutherland Award.
As a former President of the American Society of Criminology and a National Associate of the National Academy of Sciences, he has led impactful research initiatives and advised policymakers. His current courses cover topics like criminological theory, comparative criminal justice systems, and corrections.
