Brian Boutwell is a Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Saint Louis University. His research focuses on the intersection of environmental factors and criminal behavior, particularly examining how aggregate-level lead exposure correlates with violent crime metrics.
His primary research interests include Criminology, Environmental Epidemiology, and Violent Crime Analysis. Boutwell investigates how biological risk factors like lead exposure interact with sociological variables to influence crime outcomes, emphasizing ecological study designs at the census tract level.
His 2017 publication in PLoS ONE demonstrates significant associations between blood lead levels and firearm crimes, assault, robbery, and homicide (but not rape), with risk ratios consistently around 1.03 across outcomes. This work highlights the necessity of studying sociological-biological risk factor synergy in crime analysis.
Boutwell collaborates extensively with researchers from Indiana University Bloomington, University of Cincinnati, and Florida State University, indicating strong interdisciplinary networks in criminological research.
