Richard Rose serves as an Adjunct Professor of Theatre in the Department of Theatre, Music and Dance. With 26 years as Barter Theatre’s artistic director, he is pivotal to its growth, overseeing attendance increases and program expansions in culture, education, and community development. His original adaptations of classic works—such as It’s A Wonderful Life, Frankenstein, and Sherlock Holmes & the Hound of the Baskervilles—are widely celebrated. He has directed 136 productions, including recent hits like White Christmas and The Music Man.
Educations:
- Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from University of California, Davis
- Bachelor of Arts from St. Norbert College
- Post-graduate work at New York University
His work emphasizes theatrical innovation and community engagement, earning him the Arthur Campbell Award for contributions to Abingdon, Virginia, and recognition from Virginians for the Arts. Beyond theatre, he sits on regional boards to advocate for the arts.
Barter Theatre, under his leadership, has become a cultural cornerstone, blending education with professional theatre through programs like its regional partnerships and youth initiatives.
