Richard Rosa is an Associate Professor of Romance Studies and Director of the Latino/a Studies in the Global South Certificate Program at Duke University. His academic career includes prior roles as an Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley (2005–2008) and Assistant Professor at Stanford University (1995–2005). He holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University (1996) and a B.A. from the University of Puerto Rico (1986).
His research focuses on intersections between finance, literature, and cultural studies in 19th-century Latin America and the Caribbean. Notable areas include sovereignty narratives in Spanish America, literary representations of economic systems, and Puerto Rican intellectual history. He directs the Latino/a Studies program, emphasizing transnational and interdisciplinary approaches.
Rosa’s work spans academic publications, including monographs like Finance and Literature in 19th Century Latin America (2021) and articles on figures like Borges and Teresa de la Parra. He received the First Endowed Professorship in French & Francophone Studies in 2018, reflecting his contributions to interdisciplinary humanities. His courses cover Caribbean literary theory, Spanish-American literature, and Borges studies, reflecting his commitment to both regional and global scholarly engagement.
He has secured grants such as the IPA-Luciana Fellin grant (2019–2021), supporting research into cultural and economic intersections. Beyond academia, his work bridges historical analysis with contemporary debates on identity and globalization.
