He holds a PhD from Rutgers University (1994), following MA (1987) and BA (1983) degrees from the University of Puerto Rico. His research focuses on 19th- and 20th-century Spanish Caribbean literature, particularly exploring themes of borders, modernity, gender, and survival strategies among marginalized groups.
His scholarly work examines authors such as Mayra Montero, Rosario Ferré, and Eugenio María de Hostos, analyzing topics like transvestism in literature, syncretic practices, and consumer cultures. He also teaches film studies, Spanish language courses, and business Spanish, with adjunct teaching experience at UMass, Clark University, and Boston College.
Research interests include modernity’s gendered dimensions, national subjectivity through literature, and the role of intellectuals. His publications span journals like Latin American Literary Review and Latin American Theatre Review, emphasizing Caribbean border narratives and cultural survival mechanisms. Though no explicit awards are listed, his work reflects sustained engagement with underrepresented voices in literary history.
Teaching and interdisciplinary collaboration are central to his career, bridging literature, film, and cultural studies. His courses often integrate Puerto Rican and broader Latin American contexts, reflecting his dual academic focus on scholarship and pedagogy.
