Dr. Richard Perks is a Senior Lecturer in Music Performance and Director of Performance at the University of Kent's Arts at Kent school. He holds a PhD from Brunel University (2013), an MMus in Contemporary Music (Brunel), a BMus in Popular Music Performance (Guitar Institute), and a BSc in Mathematics (University of Southampton). His research focuses on the fretless electric guitar’s performance possibilities, intercultural collaboration, and microtonal applications. Notable achievements include winning the International Microtonal Guitar Competition (2023) and co-editing the book *21st Century Guitar: Evolutions and Augmentations* (2023). He leads the vLookup Trio and has collaborated internationally with artists like Ali Azimi and Prof. Tolgahan Çoǧulu. His work explores hybrid musical cultures, technological augmentation, and notation innovations.
Key research projects include *Fretless Architecture* (examining solo and ensemble performance) and *Strung Together* (a 2017 intercultural project in San Francisco). He has performed globally, recorded with major artists, and contributed to festivals like the Dutch Fretless Guitar Festival. Awards include the 2018 University of Kent Humanities Faculty Teaching Prize and a research scholarship to Istanbul Technical University (2019).
Publications span journals, edited volumes, and compositions, with a focus on guitar innovation, hybridity, and microtonal techniques. His teaching emphasizes peer review, reflective feedback, and is informed by a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education and Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
