Richard O'Donnell is a Professor of Percussion at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) and serves as Section Leader/Principal Percussionist of the RTE National Symphony Orchestra since 1997. His career spans international orchestral roles, including with the RTE Concert Orchestra, Colombia's National Symphony Orchestra, and Spain's Basque National Orchestra. Active in contemporary music, he was a core member of Concorde for 25+ years, leading over 15 international tours and commissions of 15 new Irish percussion works. He directs RIAM's Percussion Ensemble and founded the annual RIAM Day of Percussion, touring globally with students to the USA, South America, and Europe.
Educationally, he teaches percussion at RIAM, mentors the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, and contributes to Trinity College's B Mus Ed and RIAM's Diploma in Community Music. His students hold prominent roles in Irish and international orchestras and academic institutions.
He holds an MMus from Brooklyn College (CUNY) and a BMus from Indiana University. O'Donnell’s work bridges performance, pedagogy, and innovation in percussion, with a focus on expanding contemporary repertoire and nurturing emerging musicians.
