Richard Nelson is a Professor of Biology and Department Chair at Covenant College, serving since 2006. He holds a BS in Biology from Furman University, a PhD in Molecular Biology and Microbiology from Case Western Reserve University, and completed postdoctoral research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
His research focuses on cellular and molecular mechanisms of developmental processes, particularly in Xenopus and planarian models. He emphasizes integration of faith and science through chapel talks and academic programs, including presentations like 'Worshiping God in Biology' (2009) and 'The Biology of Sexuality' (2018). His work bridges basic biological research with theological reflection on creation stewardship.
Active in undergraduate research mentorship, Nelson co-authored studies on cell adhesion during gastrulation and regeneration processes in planarians. He collaborates with students on projects presented at conferences like Posters on the Prairie (2017). His teaching philosophy emphasizes student engagement and holistic scientific formation.
