Richard Mora is a Professor of Sociology at Occidental College since 2006. He holds a B.A. in Sociology from Harvard College, an M.A. in Education from the University of Michigan, and M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Harvard University. His research focuses on masculinities, education policy, youth cultures, juvenile justice, and social inequality. Mora has received the 2014 Linda and Tod Whilte Teaching Prize and the 2017 Donald Loftsgordon Memorial Award for Outstanding Teaching.
His work explores intersections of gender, race, class, and education through courses like the Sociology of (Non) Violence, Masculinities, and the Sociology of Education. Notable research includes studies on Latino boys’ masculinity and puberty, the school-to-prison pipeline, and juvenile detention narratives. Mora serves as an Advisory Editor for Sociological Perspectives and previously served on the Gender & Society editorial board.
Mora’s publications span peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and encyclopedic entries, addressing topics such as neoliberal education reforms, immigrant youth discourse, and cinematic representations of Chicano identity. His presentations include keynotes at conferences like the International Conference on the Geographies of Children Youth and Families (2015) and invited lectures at institutions like the University of Barcelona (2013).
