Richard Meier is a Professor of English and Writer-in-Residence at Carthage College, where he directs the creative writing program and curates the Visiting Writers Series. He joined Carthage in 2008 after holding visiting roles at Columbia College (2007–2008) and Beloit College (2002–2005), where he also directed creative writing from 2004 to 2005.
- Education: B.A. in Creative Writing from Hamilton College (1988); M.A. in English with a concentration in Creative Writing from Syracuse University (1993).
His research and creative work focus on poetry, experimental forms, and the intersection of walking with durational writing practices. Influenced by poets like Baudelaire and Rilke, as well as literary theorists like Woolf and Shklovsky, Meier’s prose poetry explores urban-rural dynamics and the ethics of naming. His recent publications include A Duration (Wave, 2023) and February March April April (Oxeye Press, 2017).
Meier has received notable recognition, including:
- Verse Prize for Terrain Vague (2001)
- Gwendolyn Brooks Prize for excellence in teaching (awarded during his time with Hands-on Stanza)
He actively engages with literary communities through public readings and workshops, and his work has been featured in Unearthed Online Literary Journal and Allium. Meier also taught poetry to elementary students in New York and Chicago, emphasizing accessible creative practices.
