Dr. Richard Meek is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, specializing in eukaryotic glycobiology and carbohydrate-processing enzymes. His work intersects structural enzymology with neurodegenerative disease research, focusing on post-translational modifications and cell signaling networks.
Key affiliations include the Plants and Food Security group, Neuroscience Institute for Life Sciences, and the ChemLife Network. His research addresses the roles of glycosylation defects in diseases like Primary Familial Brain Calcification.
- Glycosylation and neurodegeneration: Investigates how defective carbohydrate-processing enzymes drive neurodegenerative disorders.
- Fundamental glycobiology: Explores enzyme mechanisms through chemical tools and structural analysis.
Recent publications highlight advancements in O-GlcNAc transferase inhibition, cryo-EM enzyme structures, and macrocyclic peptide therapeutics. He supervises PhD students Jacob Willcox (SoCoBio) and Nicole Elise James (Biological Sciences), accepting applications for new advisees.
