Richard Mallett is a PhD student in the Department of International Development at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). His research focuses on urban dynamics, decent work, and the political economy of livelihoods, particularly in post-conflict and informal work contexts. Prior to LSE, he served as a Research Fellow at the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), focusing on state-building, post-conflict recovery, and migration. He remains affiliated with ODI as a Research Associate.
He holds a BA in Geography from University College London and an MSc in Violence, Conflict and Development from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). His doctoral research examines transformations in work and livelihood systems through a case study of Kampala’s boda boda motorcycle taxi sector, analyzing its socio-economic and political implications.
Key areas of expertise include cities, informal economies, migration, and labour rights. His work bridges theory and policy, emphasizing mixed-methods approaches to understand marginalized communities and inform development strategies. Though no scientific awards are cited, his contributions to post-conflict recovery and labour studies are notable in academic circles.
Grants and funding include his ESRC PhD stipend. He has advised on projects related to livelihood recovery and youth employment in post-conflict zones. While no formal lab affiliations are mentioned, his research collaborates with field practitioners in Uganda and Kampala.
