Dr. MacIntyre's research centers on Caring Science application in nursing education, integrating mindfulness-based stress reduction and HeartMath techniques to develop heart-brain coherence. His work explores transformative leadership in dysfunctional healthcare systems using assessment tools like MBTI and Enneagram, with emphasis on student development and ethical practice.
His publication trends (2009-2019) reveal three dominant themes: innovation in RN to BSN curriculum using Caritas processes, analysis of academic-practice partnerships for clinical education, and ethical/legal frameworks in HIV/AIDS nursing. Recent works focus on measurable outcomes of mindfulness interventions in nursing programs.
His honors include:
- American Academy of Nursing Fellowship (2004)
- Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellowship (2006-2009)
- Fulbright Award at University of Tromsø (1996-1997)
- Dean’s Appreciation Award for RN to BSN Program (2014-2017)
- WHO-affiliated HIV/AIDS Nursing Post-doctoral Fellowship (1995-1996)
As an academic leader, he founded Samuel Merritt's RN to BSN program and co-developed the AIDS nursing coalition. His grants include Fulbright and Robert Wood Johnson funding supporting HIV/AIDS research and caring science implementation. He serves on Western Governors University's National Advisory Council and as Senior Consultant for the American Red Cross Nursing Division.
He directs the Watson Caring Science Institute framework implementation within the RN to BSN curriculum and leads a research team studying heart-brain coherence outcomes. His second sabbatical (2019) focuses on evaluating Caritas processes in nursing education transformation.
