Richard MacDonald

Richard MacDonald is a Senior Lecturer and Senior Tutor in Media, Communications, and Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. He holds a PhD (2009), MRes (1998), and BSc (1996) from Goldsmiths. His research explores media ethnography, focusing on technological infrastructures, publics, urban life, and film historiography. His work spans film culture, memory studies, and digital platforms, with notable contributions to understanding cinema’s role in ritual practices and urban development.

Key grants and awards include the British Academy/ASEASUK Visiting Fellowship (2014), Newton Fund Institutional Links (2018), and Newton Fund Mobility Grant (2016). He supervises students in areas like film historiography, rogue archives, and Southeast Asian experimental cinema. His edited journal Archaeology of the Moving Image (2022) highlights student research on moving image culture.
